It may not seem like office design plays that much of a role in how productive your business is, but it does. A well-designed office makes employees happy, and happy employees are more productive. There are several small changes you can make in your office that will make a big difference in your business’s productivity.
Sound Control
Whether you work in a home office and you’re trying to block out sounds from kids and pets, or you’re in an office with a bunch of other people, controlling sound is important for your productivity. Big or small, it’s usually best to keep noise relatively low in an office setting. If listening to music helps you focus and get more done, consider investing in a pair of nice headphones. Headphones can also be useful for blocking out noisy co-workers. If there is a particular room that makes a lot of noise, consider installing sound-absorbing panels on the walls to help keep the noise level to a minimum.
Good Lighting
Lighting doesn’t just set the mood for a nice date. It can also set the mood for a good, productive work day. Adequate lighting is crucial to any work space, but if you really want to step up the lighting in your office, consider color balanced high-powered CFL bulbs. These bulbs come as closely to mimicking natural sunlight as possible, which can be naturally energizing. Regular fluorescent bulbs can be harsh and make people feel uncomfortable. A change as small as lighting may not seem like a lot, but it really is.
Ergonomics
Human productivity can only go as far as the body allows. Towards the end of the work day, neck, back, and headaches can start to set in, and carpal tunnel is no fun. If you’re a small business owner, your work is never done, even when your body has had enough. Investing a bit in desks, chairs, and computer monitors that are all the correct height will go a long way toward increasing physical comfort while at work. You can even get ergonomically designed keyboards. It’s also not a bad idea to have a few work stations set up where people can stand up and work if they choose to.
