Avoid pieces built with harsh glues, finishes, or stains that can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which reduce indoor air quality and can be toxic to manufacture. Surprisingly, wood can be one of the more environmentally friendly options, so long as you choose pieces that are certified to be responsibly and sustainably sourced by organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council. Wood pieces are built to last, require replacement far less often, and are the most easily recyclable when their life is coming to an end.
